Minister for Music and Organist
Gary Wendt is currently Minister for Music and Organist at Glenview Community Church. He began as Interim Organist in 2005, was hired as Director of Instrumental Music in 2006 and appointed Minister for Music in 2011. From 2000-2002, Gary was the Director of Children’s Choirs. He directs the Joyful Ringers Handbell Choir and the Pilgrim Wind Ensemble at GCC. He continues to develop, administrate and program the church’s Simple Gifts Concert Series, which each year offers over a dozen performances by regional and nationally known artists and ensembles.
Since 1977, Gary Wendt has held various church music positions throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. He has studied organ with numerous private instructors including Jerome Butera and Margaret McElwain Kemper. Through his career he has had the honor of accompanying choirs in places such as the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. and Notre Dame de Paris, and currently performs recitals and concerts throughout the Chicagoland area.
A native of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Gary received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in music education and did graduate work at DePaul University of Chicago. When he is not at the organ bench, you can find him teaching music at Hubbard Woods Elementary School in Winnetka. Gary is Founder of The Innocent Wisdom Project, a research compilation of inquiry-based arts education projects, and Studio One Chicago, an interdisciplinary arts studio. Gary is a guest lecturer at Northwestern University, focusing on composition and technology with primary-aged children, works with undergraduates from Northwestern and DePaul Universities, and has received numerous awards for his work in the field of music education. He has worked with the education programs of Chicago Chamber Musicians, Lyric Opera of Chicago and served as advisor to the Metropolitan Opera Guild in New York - Creating Original Opera Program.
